Abstract
The authors studied 35 cases of central nervous system tumors with immunocytochemical method using glial fibrillary acidic proteins in formalin fixed and paraffin embedded tissue sections. The cases employed in this study included astrocytoma, ependymoma, oligodendroglioma, medulloblas toma, neuroblastoma, ;meningioma, neurilemmoma and metastatic tumors in the brain.
Of these, astrocytoma and ependymoma groups showed a strong positive immunoreactive staining reaction, and the remaining tumors were negative for the staining reaction.
In a mixed glial tumor, areas of astrocytoma and ependymoma showed a positive reaction. These observations strongly suggest that the cytochernical localization of the glial fibrillary acidic protein by peroxidase-antiperoxidase , staining method may be applied to the routine histopathological diagnostic procedures, particularly in differentiation and identification of the filial tumors.
